I had some trouble with the premise that the hero is so damaged because his mother had an affair with his biological father (a servant) and that makes all noblewomen untrustworthy, and it did bog down the story in the middle. I usually don't like these super-alpha hero's that much, but Ranulf was a little different. He was definitely a man-ho before he met Ariane (the second time), but he did not cheat on her.
